Phone fell in the toilet? Here's the 10-minute rescue plan
It happens fast. A back-pocket bend, a distracted moment reaching for toilet paper, a slippery-hand mid-flush. Now your phone is at the bottom of the bowl. This guide walks through exactly what to do in the first 10 minutes, why toilet water is chemically harder on a phone than pool water, and how to avoid the mistakes that turn a recoverable dunk into a $600 repair bill.
You already retrieved the phone. Good. Now everything comes down to the next 10 minutes. This guide gives you the exact sequence — plus the hygiene steps most rescue guides skip because they focus only on pool water. Toilet water is different, and treating it like pool water leaves you with a working phone you don't want to hold to your face.
Why toilet water is harder on a phone than pool water
Pool water is chlorinated and mineral-heavy but bacterially clean-ish. Toilet water is the opposite. Two specific hazards:
- Bacteria on the exterior. Even a "clean" toilet has bacterial residue. This isn't a damage risk for the electronics — bacteria don't corrode metal — but you'll be putting this phone against your face for calls. The exterior needs a proper wipe-down before you use it normally.
